Chapter
Twenty-Two
âSomeone was here,â Rayra said, her voice echoing the urgency inside Julianâs mind.
âHow so?â he asked, already getting up. In the distance, he could see Liz's silhouette close to the caveâs entrance. She was standing there, looking into the horizon.
âCome, and youâll see,â Rayra waved, and he followed.
When they reached the end of the cave, she looked at the ground and pointed. âCan you see it?â Julian couldnât see anything, and his face said that without him needingto voice the words. âLook closely,â she demanded.
He crouched on the rocky ground and saw no signs of any prints or tracks on the dirty ground and floor. He couldnât identify any patterns until Rayra grabbed a stick and made a drawing on the ground. The flow of her movement traced a strange pattern. It said nothing to Julian, but he could see how the result was the same as the patch he had looked at before. Looking to the next patch of ground closer to the entrance, he could see the same result, as if she had drawn it further and again.
âDid you see anything?â Julian asked, looking up at Liz.
âNothing, Lord Julian, and I stayed up all the time looking at the woods.â
âYou too?â Julian asked Rayra.
âNothing at all, but this is the work of someone hiding footprints. I tracked our path part of the way back into the woods and found more.â
The idea of someone following them and being able to enter the cave without anyone noticing gave Julian the creeps. Suddenly, the placeâs darkness and humid air became eerie instead of comforting.
âItâs the same person from the Cyclops dungeon. The one who entered there before us,â Julian muttered, wary of the possibility of an invisible foe being near to them.
The trio traded glances, all of them agreeing in silence. Whoever it was had figured out the dungeon entrance before them or entered with them without being noticed. They must be powerful and dangerous to be invisible for so long.
âWe need to get moving,â Liz said as she grabbed her things.
âI donât believe they are still here,â Julian said, his voice slowly relaxing. âWhoever this person is, they want to find the treasure. If they wanted to kill us, we would already be dead. They were probably following us to determine if we knew more. Since we were lost, they headed on their way.â
âI agree,â Rayra said with a nod. âI found some footprints going in several directions. Whoever this stranger is, they are resourceful. They didnât believe we could detect them, but tried to hide their trail, anyway.â
âSo, itâs not the same person who saved us from that monster,â Liz affirmed, and the other two agreed.
âIf it were them, they wouldâve had no reason not to show their face to us. Our savior is probably a native,â Rayra said thoughtfully.
She expressed Julianâs consideration of the matter to perfection. Instead of adding something to the discussion, he only nodded as he got up, adjusting his things and dusting off his clothes.
